France’s ministry of education has moved 2,500 servers from 30 local education authorities to Linux as part of their open source investment. This comes in an attempt to avoid lock in contracts with vendors. The cost of proprietary licenses along with forced upgrades are something they hope to avoid by eventually moving all systems to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
