Dozens of grammatical and spelling mistakes were found throughout a press pack given to journalists ahead of the new school year beginning. The mistakes were so bad that commentators have labeled the minister, Luc Chatel, a “dunce” and claimed that even a non native French speaker would spot the countless errors.

This week 270 million pupils will return to class in Europe, leading health officials to fear there may be a possible rise in the number of swine flu cases being diagnosed daily. In France, schools where students are showing any swine fly symptoms within a week of their return will be closed to prevent further spread of the potentially fatal H1N1 virus. The UK and US however plan on keeping schools open unless it appears the health care system is becoming overwhelmed and will be unable to handle the influx of new cases presented to them.

Younger children will adapt to the change much easier than a older child. For teenagers who are just starting out their education in France it can be very difficult. Your child will need plenty of support during this difficult time. Not understanding the language can be frustrating and lead to feeling inferior.

Education in France for foreign students under the age of ten is not as difficult as you may believe. Each child is different, but the first year is usually the hardest. Learning the French language is the most important factor in success as a foreign student. You might be able to find free French lessons offered through state schools, but generally no concessions are made for foreign students. Foreign students are first tested before placed in classes.
